Moving & Handling of People Refresher

Course Aims

• To update learners' knowledge, skills and practice in assistive handling with the opportunity to use a range of handling equipment
• To update learners understanding of legal duties and responsibilities
• To update learners understanding of risk factors associated with moving and handing of people
• To update learners understanding of the Principles of Effective Movement

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

• Describe risk factors and demonstrate the Principles of Effective Movement
• Demonstrate a range of handling methods to support clients
• Demonstrate safe use of a range of handling equipment

Course Content

• Adopting a person-centred approach to consider psycho-social impacts of assistive handling and positioning
• Types and consequences of injury
• Principles of effective movement
• Legislation (responsibilities and duties) and risk assessment

Practical demonstrations and practice including:

• Range of practical handling methods
• Using minimally assistive handling methods
• Safe use of handling aids and equipment
• Range of transfer and problem solving
