Practical Hoisting

Course Aims

  • To enable learners to understand their legal duties and responsibilities
  • To enable learners to understand risk factors associated with hosting people
  • To enable learners to understand the Principles of Effective Movement
  • To enable learners to have confidence in using a range of hoisting equipment and handling methods


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Understanding legislation related to hoisting people
  • Describe risk factors and demonstrate the Principles of Effective Movement
  • Use a range of handling methods to support clients
  • Use a range of equipment, including hoists and slings


Course content

  • Adopting a person-centred approach to consider the phycho-social impacts of assistive handling and positioning
  • Risk factors and the Princicples of Effective Movement
  • Legislation (responsibilities and duties) and risk assessment
  • Use of a range of hositing equipment


Practical demonstrations and practice including:

  • Range of practical handling methods
  • Safe use of mobile and ceiling track hoists
  • Applying/removing a sling (seated and lying transfers)
  • Range of hoist transfers and problem solving
