Practical Hoisting Refresher

Course Aims

  • To update learners' knowledge, skills and practice in assistive handling wit the opportunity to use a range of hoisting equipment
  • To update learners understanding of legal duties and responsibilities
  • To update learners understanding of risk factors associated with moving and handling and hoisting of people
  • To update learners understanding of Principles of Effective Movement


Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Describe risk factors and demonstrate the Principles of Effective Movement
  • Demonstrate safe use of a range of handling methods to support clients
  • Demonstrate safe use of a range of equipment, including hoists and slings


Course Content

  • Adopting a person-centred approach to consider the phyco-social impacts of hoisting
  • Types of consequences of injury
  • Principles of effective movement
  • Legislation (responsibilities and duties) and risk assessment


Practical demonstrations and practice including:

  • Range of practical handling methods
  • Safe use of mobile and ceiling track hoists
  • Applying/ removing a sling (seated and lying transfers)
  • Range of hoist transfers and problem solving
